Ile aux Galets or Gallets, and also known as Skillagallee or Skillagalee Island, is located in northeast Lake Michigan approximately 7.0 miles (11.3km) northwest of Cross Village, Michigan. The Emmet County, Michigan lighthouse sits atop and warns of a dangerous gravel shoal — it extends almost two miles to the east and half a mile to the northwest — that is an imminent hazard to navigation, ships and men. This site has been the continuous operating home of a U.S. government lighthouse since 1850.

History

The islet is home to a significant colony of ring-billed gulls. Its name, given by early French explorers, means “Isle of Pebbles.” It is said that the English speakers found the French name unpronounceable, and “Ile aux Galets” — soon misheard, misunderstood and mispronounced — transmuted into “Skillagalee” (or some variant) which took hold. By the “mid 1800’s references to the original French name all but disappeared.”

There are many wrecks on Skillagalee island. However, in September 27, 1850, the loss of the A.D. Patchin — a wood sidewheeler, 226feet (69m) long and built in Trenton, Michigan in 1846 — led to the construction of the first light on the island. Loaded with general goods, the Patchin’s course into Grays Reef Passage was disrupted by currents that pulled her onto Skillagalee’s shore. Her crew escaped and was rescued, but foul winds and weather thwarted many attempts to set her free. She was “pounded to pieces, becoming yet another of Lake Michigan’s many victims.”

Congress appropriated sums to construct a light on Skillagalee Island in 1851, and the task was undertaken by the Department of the Treasury, the administrative predecessor to the Lighthouse Board. Due in part to the extreme exposure of the location, that lighthouse badly and quickly deteriorated and was replaced in 1868.

In 1888, the United States Lighthouse Board built the current 58-foot (17.5-m) tower and equipped it with a ’state of the art’ fourth order Fresnel lens. This is the third lighthouse on the island. This “handsome” lighthouse shares its design with only one one other, Port Sanilac Light, on Lake Huron.

In 1890, the station’s fog signals were upgraded from the existing steam siren to 10-inch steam whistles. On October 4, the Lighthouse steam barge RUBY delivered a work party and the necessary equipment for the upgrade. Within the month the task was completed, and the old sirens were thereupon transferred to Beaver Island Head Light. “Life was busy for the keepers . . . that following year, since in addition to tending the light and maintaining the equipment, they operated the station’s new steam whistles . . . 268 hours, [stoking] 26 tons of coal into their boilers.” In 1894 the boathouse, boatways and landing crib were moved fifteen feet toward the lake, due to the ever fluctuating water levels.

The islet and lighthouse were occupied by lighthouse keepers from 1850 until 1969, when the Fresnel lens was retired. At the time, a Coast Guard crew razed all the structures (fog signal building, keeper’s house, oil storage shed and boathouse), leaving only the tower in the middle of the island. An automated 300mm Tidelands acrylic plastic lens was placed in the lantern, powered by 12-volt batteries attached to a photovoltaic array mounted on the parapet’s railing.

Current status

It is accessible only by small boat. Due to shallow water and dangerous reefs, any close approach to the island by boat is almost impossible (one source notes: “dangerous waters, and there are no facilities for landing on the island”); and the light is closed in any event.

The light is listed on the National Register of Historic Places Reference #84001389; Name of Listing: SKILLAGALEE LIGHT STATION.

The company manufactures on-demand mass injection cigarette vending machines. These vending machines can be installed anywhere where cigarette products are currently sold. The customers get a fresher and better tasting product at subsantial savings. The operators get a higher profit margin compares to the cigarette products they are currently selling. After 8 years of research and development and almost 10 millions dollars invested in the project, the final kiosks are ready to roll out. Customers would buy their tobacco in flakes, much like they do now when they roll their own cigarettes. They in turn would choose their tube and pour the tobacco in the kiosk. Push a button and a few minutes later, they get 100 perfect cigarettes in boxes. Cheaper than conventional cigarettes and a lot better tasting because the product is pure and fresh. The company has the worldwide marketing rights for these kiosks. They are being build in Montreal, Canada in a multi-million dollar plant. The technology comes from Fran

Americana/LeSourdsville Lake Amusement Park was an amusement park located in Monroe, Ohio, USA. This park is currently closed with no immediate plans to be reopened. When the park opened in 1922 it was named LeSourdesville Lake. The name was changed after the 1977 season to Americana Amusement Park. The park closed after the 1999 season and was sold in 2000. It opened briefly in 2002 but closed unexpectedly before the end of the season. It has been closed since that time.

Middletown, Ohio, resident Edgar Streifthau opened LeSourdsville Lake Amusement Park on May 8, 1922. The park’s modest beginning slowly transformed the park into one of the Midwest’s best traditional amusement parks. Edgar’s dream was to transform the former ice manufacturing facility in the tiny village of LeSourdsville into an area for residents to enjoy a decent and clean place to picnic and swim with friends and family. Construction began on the park in 1921. Edgar and his business partner, Bill Rothfuss, built a bathhouse, a restaurant, dance hall and a bridge crossing the abandoned Miami-Erie Canal that passed through the property linking the parking lot and the park. They also constructed a concrete bottom in the man-made lake for swimming.

Admission was 10 cents per person, 25 cents for swimming and 10 cents for a jitney dance per couple. LeSourdsville Lake was open for business and attracting thousands of area residents.

Edgar began the second season by constructing the first of several “vacation” cabins surrounding the lake and platforms for camping tents. Edgar’s brother, Ernest, joined his brother as a partner as Bill Rothfuss advanced his career at nearby ARMCO Steel (now known as AK Steel).

Within two years, Edgar stopped hosting dances at the park due to numerous fights that occurred on a regular basis. Meanwhile, more cabins were built and improvements were made to the lake to keep the water fresh and maintain it at a constant level. In 1929, Edgar purchased 100acres (0.40km2) of apple orchard located between the park and the village of LeSourdsville. The land was needed to accommodate the increasing number of people visiting the park.

Despite the onset of The Great Depression, Edgar continued to expand the park’s offerings. He expanded the bathhouse, installed a new parking lot, built the park’s first office building, and imported over 1,000 tons of white sand for the beach. Admission prices, food prices and employee wages were cut. Just before the park was to open for the 1934 season, an accidental fire destroyed the bathhouse. Edgar was desperate to rebuild a new bathhouse before the park opened in May. He went to the Middletown Lumber Company and solicited the assistance of a personable and talented draftsman, Don Dazey. On May 30, the park opened with a new bathhouse.

Edgar realized how valuable Don’s talents could be operating the park and offered him a 1/3 interest in the park with an option to purchase 1/2 interest at a later date. Don accepted the challenge and began making changes immediately. He convinced Edgar that dances could be successful without the fighting and melee that plagued the park in earlier years. Don constructed the Stardust Gardens next door to the bathhouse. Bands such as Ray McKinley, Glenn Miller, the Dorsey Brothers and Stan Kenton graced the rich, maple wood floor to the delight of thousands of customers.

Don also solicited area companies to hold their picnics at the park and began an important tradition that continued until the park closed. Edgar also added two toboggan water slides, a waterwheel, seven diving boards, and a 20-foot (6.1m) high platform for diving. Thanks to the efforts of Don Dazey and Edgar’s drive to survive The Great Depression, LeSourdsville Lake was ready to enter the 1940s with a full head of steam. In 1939, Edgar purchased a 1927 John Miller wood coaster from Moxahalia Amusement Park in Zanesville, Ohio for $35,000. The coaster was rebuilt and named “The Cyclone.”

The 1940s represented an important decade for LeSourdsville Lake. The park became the “Miami Valley’s Chosen Playground” and became the hottest entertainment spot during the summer months.

In 1941, the park added The Whip and a giant Ferris wheel to its “thrill ride” line-up. Bands appearing in the Stardust Gardens Ballroom included Eddie Kadle, Earl Holderman, Gene Roberts, Mary Marshall, Little Joe Hart, Eugene Jelesnick, Billy Snyder, Tommy Flynn, Billy Yates, Jimmy Scriber and Emerson Gill. The following summer, Carl Taylor, Lloyd Labrie and Michael Mehas joined the Stardust Gardens headliners. Edgar also built a new front entrance and added a section of new midway near the entrance to the The Cyclone.

Edgar and Don were recipients of an award given by the Secretary of War, Harry Stimson, for the part the park played with providing Army and Navy personnel with free entry in the park. Bobby McClung, a member of the Dead End…(and so on)

Traditional use of leaf springs

A traditional leaf spring arrangement.

A leaf spring is a long, flat, thin, and flexible piece of spring steel or composite material that resists bending. The basic principles of leaf spring design and assembly are relatively simple, and leafs have been used in various capacities since medieval times. Most heavy duty vehicles today use two sets of leaf springs per solid axle, mounted perpendicularly to support the weight of the vehicle. This system requires that each leaf set act as both a spring and a horizontally stable link. Because leaf sets lack rigidity, such a dual-role is only suited for applications where load-bearing capability is more important than precision in suspension response.

Leaf springs on the Corvette

The C5 Corvette’s rear suspension.

All six generations of the Corvette have used leaf springs in some capacity. The basic arrangement for each generation is listed as follows:

C1 (1953-1962):

Front: Independent unequal-length double wishbones with coil springs

Rear: Rigid axle supported by leaf springs and longitudinal control links

C2 (1963-1967), C3 (1968-1982):

Front: Independent unequal-length double wishbones with coil springs

Rear: Independent suspension with trailing and lateral links supported by a centrally mounted leaf spring

C4 (1984-1996):

Front: Independent unequal-length double wishbones with transverse fiberglass mono-leaf spring mounted to allow for anti-roll effect.

Rear: Independent suspension with trailing and lateral links supported by a centrally mounted fiberglass mono-leaf spring

C5 (1997-2004), C6 (2005-):

Front: Independent unequal-length double wishbones with transverse fiberglass mono-leaf spring mounted to allow for anti-roll effect.

Rear: Independent unequal length double wishbones with transverse fiberglass mono-leaf spring mounted to allow for anti-roll effect.

In the C2 and subsequent generations, a leaf spring is mounted transversely in the chassis and used in conjunction with several independent suspension designs. Common to these post-C1 Corvettes, the leaf acts only as a spring, and not a suspension arm or a link. Because it is not required to stabilize the wheels, the leaf functions in much the same manner as a coil spring. This configuration obviates the drawbacks and imprecision associated with traditional Hotchkiss (non-transverse leaf spring) suspensions.

Although commonly referred to as a “leaf spring suspension” it is more accurately called an independent double A-arm suspension.

Motion of a transverse leaf spring

The following images show the movements of an independent suspension using a transverse leaf spring. For all images:

The suspension arms are green

The chassis is blue

The uprights are gray

Leaf springs are dark gray

Pivot links connecting the ends of the springs to the suspension arms are red

1 - A transverse leaf spring suspension at rest, with separate right and left springs.

2 - The same split-spring configuration with the left wheel in compression.

Illustrations #1 and #2 show independent left and right leaf springs mounted rigidly to a chassis. In the first illustration, the suspension is at rest. As a left wheel moves up in the second illustration, the left spring flexes upward, but the right spring remains unaffected. Because the two springs are not connected, the movement of one wheel has no effect on the spring rate of the opposite wheel. While the C2, C3, and C4 Corvettes used a continuous spring instead of the split spring of the illustration, left and right spring rates remained independent because the spring was rigidly mounted at its center to the chassis.

3 - A single transverse leaf spring suspension similar to that used on the C5 and C6 Corvette.

4 - The same single-leaf suspension with both wheels compressed upward.

Illustrations #3 and #4 show an independent suspension with a single transverse leaf spring, an arrangement similar to that used on the C5 and C6 Corvettes, and the front of the C4 Corvette. While at rest in illustration #3, the leaf forms a symmetric arc between the left and right sides of the suspension. Under the compression of both wheels in illustration #4, the widely-spaced chassis mounts…(and so on)

Plot

Nancy is helping Rose, a friend of Nancy’s house maid, get settled into an old Victorian mansion in San Francisco that she is turning into a bed and breakfast. Strange accidents are slowing down the renovation, and Nancy is trying to figure out who, or what, is trying to scare everyone away. According to legend, a fortune in long-lost gold is hidden somewhere on the property and someone might be creating these “accidents” to scare everyone away.

As Nancy explores the mansion she experiences some strange things occurring, such as doors slamming, ghosts in the mirror, and odd sounds.

According to the legend of the gold a bandit known as El Diablo Valdez fell in love with an actress Lizzie Applegate. After robbing a huge sum of gold he left it for her in the mansion, which she previously owned. However, he hid the gold in a secret location and Lizzie died before she could find it. It is said that the spirits of Valdez and Lizzie still haunt the mansion looking for the treasure.

Telling Louis that they found “Gum Bo Fu” in a book instead of in a magazine.

Staying in Abby’s room after 6pm and getting caught.

Letting the culprit get away.

Oshibori presented on a small bamboo stand

An oshibori (???? or ??? ?) is a wet hand towel offered to customers in places such as restaurants or bars in Japan and in Japanese restaurants worldwide. Oshibori are used to clean one’s hands before eating, and have long been a common sight in Japan. Cold oshibori are used in summer, and hot oshibori in winter. In mah-jong parlors, the words atsushibo and tsumeshibo, from the Japanese words atsui (?? ?), hot, and tsumetai (??? ?), cold, are sometimes used to refer to hot and cold oshibori respectively.

Derivation of word

The word oshibori comes from the Japanese word shiboru (?? ?), meaning “to wring”, with the polite prefix o, which is added to several types of nouns, including many nouns related to washing or food. In Japanese script, the word oshibori is normally written in hiragana (????), seldom using kanji (??? or ???).

Oshibori are also known as otefuki, from the Japanese te (? ?) (hand) and fuku (?? ?), to wipe.

A typical oshibori, made of cloth, is dampened with water and wrung. It is then placed on the dining table for customers to wipe their hands with before or during the meal. The oshibori is often rolled or folded and given to the customer on some kind of tray. Even if a tray is not used, it is usually rolled up into a long, thin shape, although this is not necessarily the case with oshibori handed out together with, say, bent? lunch boxes.

Many establishments also give out towels made of non-woven cloth or paper, which are generally used once and then disposed of. Paper ones sometimes contain a sterilizing agent such as alcohol or stabilized chlorine dioxide. Paper oshibori, unlike cloth oshibori, can be folded and put into a very thin plastic wrapping, for inclusion with packaged products such as bent? lunch boxes, for example in convenience stores.

Hot and cold oshibori

An oshibori can be moistened with hot water at an appropriate temperature or steam to make a hot oshibori, or placed damp into a refrigerator to make a cold oshibori suitable for use in summer. Sometimes in Europe it is more commonly known as Hot Towel. Restaurants usually use an electric appliance such as a heating cabinet or refrigerator for this. The heated towel used in barber’s shops to give moisture to the skin or beard and make it easier to shave can also be thought of as a type of oshibori.

Rented oshibori

As many establishments use oshibori in large quantities, they often do not prepare them in the store, but instead employ a rental service which launders them, rolls them into the typical cylindrical shape, and delivers them already damp. These rental service companies services frequently wrap each oshibori individually in a clear, lightweight plastic seal (polyethylene film), which can be easily broken and removed by the customer before using. Rental services typically use each oshibori about 25 times before selling them to third parties as cleaning rags or dustcloths.

Disposable Oshibori

Now many places can offer a disposable form of oshibori. These towels are all individually wrapped and pre-moistened and even come in different scents.

Oshibori Dispenser

Now some beauty salon and dental clinic prefer to use a standalone oshibori dispenser, on which freshly-made towel is manufactured with client’s request. Towel material is leaning towards Nonwovens fibre

IMDb ? Allmovie

Operation Petticoat is a 1959 comedic film directed by Blake Edwards, and starring Cary Grant, Tony Curtis, and Dina Merrill, later adapted for television in 1977.

The film tells in flashback form the story of a fictional World War II American submarine USS Sea Tiger, sunk in the Philippine Islands during the opening days of World War II. Operation Petticoat follows the adventures and tribulations of the sub’s skipper (Grant) and his crew (including Curtis as a deviously mercenary supply officer), as they first try to repair the sub and then reach Australia for the necessary refit. The voyage includes various detours along the way, including the acquisition of a group of stranded female Army nurses, an attempt to sink a Japanese ship, and a hurried stopover to overhaul and repaint the sub which quickly goes awry.

Other members of the cast includes several actors who became television stars in the 1960s and 1970s: Gavin MacLeod of Love Boat and McHale’s Navy as Yeoman Hunkle, Marion Ross of Happy Days as Army 2LT Colfax, Dick Sargent, (later to star in the series Bewitched), as LT Stovall, Arthur O’Connell (The Second Hundred Years), and Gene Evans (Spencer’s Pilots}.a

The movie was written by Paul King & Joseph Stone (story) and Stanley Shapiro & Maurice Richlin (screenplay). It received an Academy Award Nomination for Best Screenplay.

The film was produced with extensive support of the Department of Defense and the United States Navy. Most of the filming was done in and around the since deactivated Naval Station Key West, Florida…which substituted for the Philippines…and Naval Station San Diego, California.

The Sea Tiger in the movie was portrayed by three different American WWII era submarines:

Queenfish (SS-393), in the opening and closing scenes (circa 1959), in which the “393″ on the conning tower is visible,

Archerfish (SS-311), for all the WWII scenes where the boat was painted the standard gray and black,

Balao (SS-285), for all the scenes in which Sea Tiger was painted pink.

Plot

The film is told in flashback form as a recollection of RADM Matt Sherman (Grant), the fictional Commander of Submarine Forces Pacific in 1959. His is the story of the fictitious World War II American submarine USS Sea Tiger, which he has boarded early that morning in 1959, prior to its departure for the scrapyard. Having served as the first commanding officer of Sea Tiger, he takes a seat in his former captain’s stateroom and begins reading his personal log, beginning with Sea Tiger coming under Japanese attack while pierside at the U.S. Naval Base in Cavite during the opening days of the Pacific War. Sunk at the pier following an air attack, the story then follows his crazy adventures as then-LCDR Matt Sherman, and his crew. The story also includes the role of a new replacement, LTJG Nick Holden (Curtis), a line officer and former admiral’s aide with minimal sea duty experience who offers himself as an opportunistic and self-styled “supply officer,” as they try first to raise the sub and then sail it to Australia for the repairs necessary to re-enter the war. Holden, also a self-styled “idea man,” signs on because he wants to get out of the Philippines before the Japanese arrive, and because he thinks he can work a better deal for himself in Australia.

Along the way they pick up a contingent of female Army nurses stranded on another Philippine island. LTJG Holden sets his sights on one of the nurses, 2LT Duran, even though he is engaged to a wealthy woman back home. Meanwhile, LCDR Sherman has a series of embarassing encounters with the very well-endowed but clumsy 2LT Crandall.

Sherman, Holden and the crew are eventually forced to continue on their journey with the sub painted pink after plans for a quick re-paint of the sub go awry (Not enough red lead or white lead undercoat primer paint is available to paint the entire sub either color, and so all the available paint of both colors is mixed together; and then the Japanese find the sub before the regular gray overcoat can be applied).

The pink sub becomes a target for an American destroyer force whose commanding officer is convinced that it must be Japanese. Grant saves the sub by firing the nurses’ bras,…(and so on)

History

Ashland was founded in 1924 as Ashland Refining Company of Ashland, Kentucky, by Paul G. Blazer. The refinery was originally set up under the guise of the Swiss Oil Company located in Lexington, Kentucky. In 1930, the nearby Tri-State Refining Company was purchased, adding 5,500 barrels per day of capacity to the company. The company continued to merge or acquire other oil companies, combining with Swiss Oil in 1936, Allied Oil in 1948, Aetna Oil in 1949, and purchasing Frontier Oil Refining and National Refining in 1950. By that time, the company began to diversify, adding petrochemicals to its portfolio with the acquisition of R. J. Brown Company in 1956 and United Carbon in 1963.

Diversification continued with the purchase of Warren Brothers in 1966, which later was to become Ashland Paving and Construction. A significant acquisition was made in 1967 when the company purchased ADM Chemical Group; whose chemical distribution business would go on to be one of the primary businesses of the company in the later part of the 20th century. In 1969, the company reorganized to form Ashland Petroleum, as well as entering into a joint venture in Coal Mining under the name Arch Mineral.

In the 1980s and early part of the 1990s, Ashland continued to expand, buying The Permian Corporation and merging it with Scurlock Oil Company in 1991 to form a subsidiary known as Scurlock Permian Corporation. In 1992, most of Unocal’s chemical distribution business was acquired, making Ashland the top chemical distributor in North America. At this time, the Industrial Chemicals & Solvents (IC&S) division was established. The company’s name was changed from “Ashland Oil” to the present “Ashland Inc.” in 1995, which noted the reduced importance of oil in the overall business.

The late 1990s saw considerable change in the structure of the company. In 1998, the petroleum division merged with Marathon Oil to form Marathon Ashland Petroleum, LLC (MAP). Following that in 1999, Ashland agreed to sell its Scurlock Permian subsidiary to Plains All American Pipeline and the headquarters were moved from Russell, Kentucky to Covington, Kentucky, although the Russell office is still in operation as of 2007. A monumental change came in 2005, when Ashland sold its shares of the Marathon Ashland Petroleum joint venture, to Marathon Oil, effectively dissolving the remnants of their petroleum division. After the sale, the company was no longer involved in the refining or marketing of fuels. The original oil refinery in Catlettsburg, Kentucky is still in operation today and is owned and operated by Marathon. In 2006, Ashland sold APAC (the paving and construction division) to Oldcastle Materials of Dublin, Ireland.

Ashland purchased the adhesive and emulsions divisions of Air Products & Chemicals in 2008.

Ashland announced plans to acquire Hercules Inc. on July 11, 2008 for $3.3B. On November 13, 2008, the transaction was completed.
