Telelocator Alphanumeric Protocol (TAP) is a protocol for submitting requests to a cellular or pager service as a numeric or alphanumeric message.
This protocol is often used to send SMS/Text Alerts to a Cell Phone.
TAP, initially known as Motorola Page Entry (PET) was adopted in September of 1988, by the Personal Communication Industry Assosication (PCIA) (at the time known as Telelocator). TAP defines the wireless standard for sending alphanumeric messages to pagers.
